Both the cricket world and my interest in it had been laying dormant in the months since the World Cup. That Australian win in Barbados was like a sudden, vicious cock-punch, and I was concerned I'd never be able to reach the same level of commitment to the game that I had before. I'm not so worried anymore.
International cricket is at a curious juncture at the moment; no one knows for certain what will (or should) happen. There are various forces pushing in different directions, and the lattice holding the whole structure together may not be as strong as most people assume it to be. Cricket-as-we-know-it may seize to exist very, very soon. And I have to admit... it has me intrigued.
We have brand new championship leagues popping into existence, trying to outshine and out-recruit each other, scores of retirements and defections, and even Warnie's damn top-50 -- not to mention the fact there's a brand new World Cup starting in less than a week! (Is everyone aware of this, by the way? It just seems to have sprung out of nowhere, and it could've been missed by a few.)
Now if I can only find some way to (a) stream every major game through the intertubes without blowing through the absurdly low and expensive bandwidth caps here in New Zealand, or (b) convince the cable company to let me subscribe to only one sports channel, for only one month, I'd be all set ...
